La Bourse du Commerce – Pinault Collection, the brand new Museum dedicated to Contemporary Art

This brand new museum opened on May 22, 2021. Just seven minutes from the Relais du Louvre, it is a must-see.

In 2016, the mayor of Paris had announced the departure of the chamber of commerce and the creation of a private museum which would present the contemporary art collections belonging to the businessman François Pinault. These comprise 10,000 works, and this collection is thought to be the one of the largest in the world.

The architect Tadao Ando was chosen to transform the building. This architect, who is well-known for his work with concrete, was able to magnify the museum’s forum and manage its traffic flows while maintaining great respect for the building’s historical character. Tradition and modernity: a combination that the Japanese have mastered particularly well. It is true that contemporary art has its roots in our past and our history.

It is above all a very beautiful place. One leaves with an idea of collector François Pinault’s intimate and audacious eye for contemporary art. This museum will reward repeat visits, because the collections will rotate, and the central atrium will host occasional collections and installations.

A short history of the Bourse du Commerce

La halle au blé en 1807

The fluted astronomical column, also called the Medici column, was built in 1574 and is the only remaining trace of a hotel, called the Hôtel de Soisson, which was built in 1232. This column could have been by the astrologer to Queen Catherine de Medici, who would use it as a space to carry out his observations and make his predictions.

In 1720, the Bourse de Paris  was established in theHôtel de Soissons which was destroyed in 1748. The current Bourse du Commerce was built in 1763 to be a corn exchange, and was redeveloped to accommodate the Bourse de Paris from 1889, and later the Chamber of Commerce.
