The must-see shows for the fall season at Théâtre du Châtelet

Théâtre du Châtelet, which is a ten-minute walk from the Relais du Louvre, is the leading theater in Paris for musical and theater productions for the general public.

Théâtre de la Ville, located opposite Théâtre du Châtelet, focuses more on plays and contemporary dance productions.

Théâtre du Châtelet opened its doors in 1862. The beautiful theatre hall has an Italian-inspired décor. Two exciting shows are scheduled for this fall season:

  • “Beyond Time by U-Théâtre” from September 4 to 18
  • “Singin’ in the Rain” from November 27, 2015, to January 15, 2016

Beyond Time by U-Théatre: a blend of dance and Tai-chi set to the beat of drums

U-Theatre est une troupe Taïwanaise dirigé par Liu Ruo-Yu, qui mélange les méthodes du jeu de Grotowski, le Tai-Chi, le jeu de tambour, et la méditation, en développant un spectacle multiforme et cérémonial.

U-Theatre is a Taiwanese dance troop led by Liu Ruo-Yu, who combines Grotowski acting methods with elements of Tai-Chi, drum beats and meditation, working them together into a multifaceted, ceremonial performance.

U-Theatre examines the relationship between humans and the universe in Beyond Time.

In this performance, the movement of sacred dance—originally a religious dance—can take on certain meanings. The movement of the planets within the solar systems mirrors the orbit of the earth, which likewise can be applied to human beings, who use their consciousness to control their bodies. This dance interprets an individual’s pursuit of harmony within the universe.

U-Theatre’s drum performances diverge from traditional drumming styles by using dancers who carry the drums on their back and use their bodies to emit sounds. The rhythm of the sound follows the rhythm of the movements, attesting to the extraordinary stability of the troop’s dancers and their control over their physical and mental equilibrium.

The three-dimensional, multilayered stage includes a fourth, more technical dimension made up of video projections and mirrors placed on the ground.

Singin’ In the Rain by Robert Carsen

This stage adaptation of the mythical film is reinterpreted by Théâtre du Châtelet, which included it on its program in March 2015, when it received a 10-minute standing ovation on the night it premiered. Costumes, dance, tap shoes, songs, an orchestra in the pit and one stage set after another: the spirit of a Broadway musical is now on full display in our Parisian theater.

“Singin’ In the Rain” tells the tribulations of a couple, both silent movie stars, confronted with the arrival of talking pictures (a theme that reminds us of another recent success: “The Artist”). This production will win the hearts of those who, like Woody Allen, love the “best musical of all time” because it honors the original without copying it.
