What is the value of the 40€ menu at Macéo?

It has been several years since we last visited Macéo. It became necessary to taste again its cuisine and to update our information for our dear customers.

We are well received and comfortable.  The room on the first floor is large and divided into a club area, a more classic space and a small “library corner” that will suit a family or a group of friends. The space between the tables, the quality of the staff, the decoration, reminds us of this restaurant from a bygone era.

The menu offers a 35€ lunch menu and a 40€ dinner menu. I am brought an appetizer. An Arancina with Mafé sauce. The arancini (arancini in the plural) is a Sicilian specialty. It is a rice-based dumpling, breaded and fried. The Mafé sauce is of African origin, made with peanuts, tomato, spice and chili. A Sicilian-African marriage? Why not? It is spicy, crunchy, and tender inside. We taste it with a Rioja Blanco “La Antigue Classico”, making here a small detour to Spain. This mix is creative and successful.

We would have appreciated that the wines are really at the price of the wine merchant, as it is announced on arrival. The wines by the glass are proposed from 9€ to 13€, that is to say the price of the bottle on the web.

We continue with a “terrine carrément cochonne” of the chef. It is well peppered and spiced with pieces and very melting parts with a rather refined taste. The salad is well seasoned but the bread lacks crunch.

We then chose the Line Place served on a sweet potato with a vinegar miso, pomegranate and peanut. It is absolutely superb. Excellent idea to marry the sweet potato with a fish in sweet and sour sauce.

Finally, we try a roasted pineapple cheesecake with spices and caramel. It is very good. I would have preferred a crunchier device, more like a shortbread. The filling is excellent and long in the mouth. The caramel is strong and consistent. The cookies are fresh and crunchy.

The wine is too expensive but the cuisine is creative and refined at an affordable price. We can classify this restaurant as semi gastronomic. We notice a very well-trained team in the dining room. The service is attentive, courteous, fast and versatile.  An atmosphere that is hard to find.
