Reopening of Our Neighbor the Théâtre du Châtelet

After two years of closure and 30 million euros in renovations, the Théâtre du Châtelet, a five-minute walk from the Relais du Louvre will finally reopen on September 13, 2019.

The program is now much more electic, though is has kept the musical “An American in Paris” and added more well-known classics. It has become much more artistic. Below is a list of 4 shows that particularly caught our attention. Remember to write down the dates.

Parade – September 13 to 15, 2019

The Parade is the event that will announce the reopening of the Théâtre du Châtelet. It will bring together three companies. Two of them will perform for free.

At the sound of the drums, the Marionnettes Géantes du Mozambique will arrive on the square of the town hall for a first fifteen-minute show which will be followed by the arrival of the Cocteau Machine, a huge bicycle maneuvered by a puppet representing Jean Cocteau. The parade will continue in the streets towards the Châtelet.

The Theater will be filled with circus attractions and performances led by clowns, acrobats, musicians, and actors. The last part of the inauguration (the only paying party) will take place in the big hall and will bring together the three companies.

Summerspace / Exchange / Scenario – Merce Cunningham, November 14 to 20, 2019

American dancer and choreographer Merce Cunningham is known to have made the conceptual transition between modern dance and contemporary dance.The Châtelet presents three of their plays created in 1958, 1978, and 1997, featuring 6 to 15 dancers.

Merce Cunningham’s movements are close to classical in form, but their energy and execution are part contemporary with sometimes undpredictable gestures mixed in.

A Quiet Evening of Dance – William Forsythe, November 4 to 10, 2019

William Forsythe is one of the greatest contemporary choreographers, adding to the list of American choreographers with a different style. He is the new associate choreographer of the Paris Opera Ballet.

This extract from DUO2015 shows three charming duets danced to an equally charming piece by Jean Philippe Rameau (Hippolyte & Aricie – Ritournelle). A mix of classical and contemporary, the movements are a dialogue between dancers. These same dancers will perform DUO2015 at the Châtelet next November.

The Seven Deadly Sins – Pina Baush, March 24 to 29, 2020

A sung ballet according to a text by Bertolt Brecht

Do we still need to present Pina Baush, one of the leading figures of contemporary dance and the mistress of the dance theater style?

“The Seven Deadly Sins” is Pina Bausch’s most theatrical show. Mixing Brecht’s text and the music of Kurt Weill, the legendary choreographer of the twentieth century has created a contemporary ballet accessible to the general public. This must-see masterpiece brings together some thirty dancers, musicians, and singers on stage.
